The Necromancer’s Bride

A D&D Adventure Inspired by Bride of Frankenstein

Mourningbell’s Overlook Cemetery is no longer a place of quiet rest. Graves are being disturbed, eerie green lights flicker through the fog, and frightened townsfolk whisper of figures skulking in the night. Are grave robbers at work—or is something darker stirring among the tombstones?

spooky cemetery art for Halloween adventure.

This adventure is a family-friendly Halloween adventure for group of up to 5 players of 3rd to 5th level. It is designed to be spooky but not too scarry. It is a mystery in 3 acts with a skill challenge, urban exploration, role playing and battle.

DM’s Notes

This one-shot is meant to be spooky fun rather than horrifying. It leans into Halloween tropes (graveyards, lightning, stitched-together monsters) while keeping the tone light for all ages. The villain is a misguided necromancer who believes he’s building “true love,” not a cruel tyrant.

  • Main Conflict: Stop the necromancer before he animates the Bride of Stitchwell.

  • Setting: The town of Mourningbell, Overlook Cemetery, the Drown Yer’ Sorrows tavern, and finally the necromancer’s laboratory.

  • Tone: Spooky, mysterious, a little silly. Think Scooby-Doo meets Frankenstein.

  • MacGuffin: The Heart-Stone, a glowing crystal stolen from the cemetery crypts that powers the necromancer’s experiments.

The Hook (Player Read-Aloud)

A chill autumn wind blows through the crooked lantern posts of Mourningbell. The townsfolk whisper nervously as another grave is found disturbed in the Overlook Cemetery. At the Drown Yer’ Sorrows tavern across the street, locals speak of eerie green lights flickering among the gravestones and shadowy figures skulking about. The mayor pleads for brave souls to investigate before the dead stop resting peacefully, and start walking.

The Adventure in 3 Acts

Act 1: Whispers Among the Graves

Goal: Gather clues and roleplay with NPCs to discover what’s happening.

  • Exploration:

    • Visit the tavern, where patrons share rumors: a cloaked figure, a wagon full of “muddy sacks,” and haunting green lights.

    • Search the cemetery to find disturbed graves, bootprints leading into the fog, and scraps of burial cloth.

Notable NPCs of Mourningbell

1. Old Bess, the Tavernkeeper

  • Role: Runs the Drown Yer’ Sorrows tavern across from the cemetery.

  • Appearance: Stout, ruddy-cheeked woman with wiry hair tied back under a scarf.

  • Personality: Superstitious, chatty, prone to exaggeration after a few mugs of ale.

  • Clues:

    • Swears she saw a “stitched shadow” carrying a lantern through the cemetery fog.

    • Claims she’s heard faint “moaning” drifting into the tavern at night.

2. Caretaker Jonas

  • Role: Worn-out caretaker of Overlook Cemetery.

  • Appearance: Gaunt man in a patched overcoat, dark circles under his eyes, always carrying a rusted lantern.

  • Personality: Exhausted, fearful, mutters under his breath. Wants help but avoids direct confrontation.

  • Clues:

    • Admits he’s chased shadows moving among the graves but never caught them.

    • Suspects magic is involved, but is too afraid to face it himself.

  • Appearance: Tall woman in a weathered traveling cloak, streaks of gray in her tied-back hair, heavy iron key ring at her belt.

  • Personality: Stern but fair, protective of the townsfolk, secretly terrified of cemeteries.

  • Clues:

    • Holds the crypt keys — but one has gone missing recently.

    • Recalls Dr. Stitchwell was once a healer in town before “turning odd.”

    • Mentions the Heart-Stone, a relic that should be sealed in the oldest crypt.

4. Father Oren Brightcandle

  • Role: Kindly priest of the town chapel.

  • Appearance: Balding, with round spectacles and white-and-gold vestments always smudged with wax.

  • Personality: Cheerful and pious, but forgetful. Loves telling ghost stories, often drifts into them mid-conversation.

  • Clues:

    • Says he’s been awakened by “green lightning” flashing near the cemetery.

    • Recalls Stitchwell listening with disturbing fascination to sermons about “life after death.”

    • Warns that unholy magic can mimic healing.

5. Maribel Thorne, the Florist

  • Role: Tends flowers for graves and decorates the cemetery gates.

  • Appearance: Wears a dark dress with apron, always has a basket of fresh-cut flowers.

  • Personality: Gentle, observant, with a streak of gallows humor.

  • Clues:

    • Found grave dirt trampled near the cemetery wall, with wagon tracks leading away.

    • Claims she saw a “shapely shadow” wheeled away on a cart through the fog.

    • Noticed flower bundles left on graves have been strangely rearranged.

6. Cobbler Silas Grimes

  • Role: Town cobbler and gossipmonger.

  • Appearance: Lean, beady-eyed, soot-smudged, smells of leather oil.

  • Personality: Nosy, excitable, thrives on rumors.

  • Clues:

    • Heard chanting on the night wind from the cemetery.

    • Insists he saw multiple figures skulking among the graves.

    • Once sold Stitchwell an oddly large supply of boots and gloves.

7. Elira Moonfen, Traveling Herbalist

  • Role: Mysterious herbalist camping on the town’s edge.

  • Appearance: Long braids with beads, patchwork cloak, satchel of herbs and crystals.

  • Personality: Calm, cryptic, speaks in riddles.

  • Clues:

    • Knows the Heart-Stone is “missing its beat” and fuels unnatural magic.

    • Remembers selling Stitchwell rare embalming herbs weeks ago.

    • Offers the players a protective charm (Candle of Comfort) if they show sincerity.

🕸️ How They Connect

  • Mayor Prudence & Father Oren → Link Stitchwell’s past to the Heart-Stone and forbidden magic.

  • Maribel & Silas → Provide eyewitness sightings of movement at night.

  • Elira → Adds mystical insight, confirming the necromantic threat.

  • Old Bess & Jonas → Establish the creepy atmosphere and eyewitness spookiness.

  • Clues:

    • Broken pocket watch found in the recently disturbed grave dirt. It is engraved with a coat of arms and a family name obscured by deep scratches and wear “St##h#e#l”.

    • A black feather charm that radiates faint necromantic energy can be found in the dirt of a recently disturbed grave. An identify spell or successful arcana check will reveal it to be a component in dark, necromancer magic.

    • Locals at the waterside docks area will gossip about how a mysterious black ship with glowing green lanterns has been spotted off the shore late at night. It is never seen during the day. (Red herring for this adventure)
    • A witness, a patron at the tavern, recalls hearing an eerie humming coming from the graveyard late at night that sounded unnervingly like a wedding march.

    • Players will eventually hear about a recent new resident of Mourning bell, Dr. Stichwell. He is a cleric that has setup shop in the abandoned monastery at the top of the hill, on the outskirts of town.

    • Recently an artifact was stolen from the crypt of a wealthily lord. The Heart-Stone. It is said to have been magical but cursed. (Dr. Stichwell has stolen it from the crypt for his final ritual.)

Act 2: Through the Fog (Skill Challenge)

The party will eventually need to setup an stakeout or plan a trap to catch the grave robbers. This will likely require shopping in the local market for supplies and working with Caretaker Jonas.

When the BBEG’s minions are spotted, they will flee to the monastery using magic to speed them on their way and cover their escape. Rings of spell storing with Misty Step and Fog Cloud. The minions will use hit and run tactics to drain the PC’s spell slots and hit points.

PC’s Goal: Navigate obstacles on the way to Stitchwell’s lab while being pursuing his shambling minions.

The finally of this act is skill challenge where each player chooses a skill to overcome obstacles. Success means they reach the monastery without major trouble; failures mean they arrive exhausted or and dammaged.

  • Obstacles:

    • Foggy Woods: Survival/Perception to follow the right path. Failure results in falling into a gully, suffering minor damage and loosing random equipment.

    • Animated Scarecrows: Intimidation/Deception to scare them off, or Acrobatics to dodge. The scarecrows are a distraction intended to scare off the locals and less heroic. Failure here leaves the characters scared, jumpy and at disadvantage on any wisdom saves for the next hour.

    • Haunted Bridge: Arcana/Religion to calm the spirits, or Athletics to secure the unstable planks. The bridge is held together by rusty nails and hope. Failure here leaves the characters injured (minor damage) and they may loose (random) equipment to the rushing waters below.

    • Pursuing Zombies: Stealth to hide, Athletics to outrun Approaching the monastery, the BBEG’s minions will stop running and attack the party. The party can choose to use a skill check to evade or out run the zombies or they can engage them in combat.

Outcome: After several obstacles, they arrive at a lightning-lashed hill where Stitchwell’s laboratory looms. The dilapidated building is barely standing and many of the previously grand stained glass windows are broken or completely missing. The doors are sturdy and seem to be recently repaired.

Act 3: The Bride Awakes!

Goal: Confront Dr. Stitchwell and stop the ritual before he animates his latest creation, his intended bride.

  • Scene: Inside the laboratory, the Bride lies unfinished on a stone slab beneath a lightning rod. Stitchwell cackles as the Heart-Stone pulses with energy. Animated body parts and stitched-together minions guard him.

  • Battle Options:

    • Combat: Defeat Stitchwell and his stitched guardians before the he can complete the ritual.

    • Alternative Ending: Players might convince Stitchwell that love can’t be created from corpses (Persuasion). If successful, he may break down in tears and release the Heart-Stone willingly.

  • Climactic Moment: If Stitchwell reaches the final stage of the ritual, the Bride awakens—but she’s confused and innocent, not evil. She may turn on Stitchwell, flee into the night or attack the party seeing them as ganging up on a seemingly defenseless man, all depending on the party’s actions.

Resolution:

  • If successful, the players recover the Heart-Stone and return peace to Mourningbell.

  • Townsfolk cheer them as heroes, though rumors of a wandering stitched Bride may hint at a spooky sequel.

  • If Stichwell succeeds in animating his bride and it looks like the party is intent on battling him and possibly killing his new creation, he will use Animate Dead to raise defenders, then use magic to escape with his bride.
  • The towns folk will praise the party for uncovering and running the necromancer out of town. The are understanding and may even reward the party with money or a magic item.
