The Great Eggscape!
A D&D Easter Adventure
A Whimsical Easter One-Shot Adventure for Young Heroes
Tone: Lighthearted, Silly, and Full of Candy
The Hook
Every spring, the magical town of Bunborough hosts the legendary Festival of Fluff, where creatures of all kinds come together to celebrate the Great Egg Guardian, a mystical bunny who enchants the land with springtime magic.
As the characters wake up and join the other guests in the inn’s dinning room, they hear several excited conversations. The Great Egg has been stolen! Without it, the flowers wilt, the chocolate rivers dry up, and—gasp—the jellybean trees stop growing!
Mayor Pufflehop is looking for help from any brave adventurers willing to track down the missing egg and save the festival.
BBEG's Plans
Eggrotter is a grumpy goblin artificer who’s tired of seeing all the happy kids frolicking in the fields while he sits all alone in his cave listening to the sounds of music and laughter floating on the breeze. He’s built the Egg Beater 9000 to siphon the magic of the Great Egg unless he’s given “the respect he deserves!”
If he doesn’t get what he wants, Eggrotter will drain all the magic from the Great Egg and use it to turn everyone in Bunborough into chocolate statures. Without the magic of the Great Egg, the entire valley will return to it’s original, non-magical state.
Solving the Mystery
The party must follow a trail of clues through enchanted forest to find Eggrotter and The Great Egg hidden at the center of the Licorice Labyrinth.
- Locals will be fast to blame the a band of mischievous Marshmallow Mephits on the outskirts of town. The Mephits will play pranks on the party and possibly steal items from them. The Mephids will lead the part to Rotten Egg Cave.
- Exploring the Rotten Egg Cave the party will have to defeat the Gummy Ooze before they find Eggrotter’s plans, including a map, his personal journal and construction plans for the Egg Beater 9000. See Eggrotter’s page for back story to help with the journal contents, should the characters find and read it.
- Cross the Soda Stream Rapids – There is a chocolate dragon napping near the broken bridge that can help with this, if he can be convinced.
- To reach the center of the Licorice Labyrinth and find the Great Egg, the party will have to get past the Chocolate Golem.
- Enter Eggrotter’s Labratory – At the center of the Labyrinth the characters will discover a magically locked door. To open the door, they must arrange a series of jellybeans in the order of the rainbow (ROYGBIV). Inside they will find Eggtrotter working on his Egg Beater 9000.
Key Moments & Fun Twists:
- Puzzle: Players solve a puzzle in the Licorice Labyrinth by arranging jellybeans in a rainbow pattern to open the final door to Eggrotter Laboratory.
- Chase/Skill Challenge: Marshmallow Mephits are mischievous and chaotic creatures that will harass and lead the characters on a chase through the woods. There are dangerous pitfalls, low hanging branches and other obstacles to avoid along the way. Loosing too many skill challenges will cause the party to lose random objects from their inventory (dropped or stolen by the Mephits).
- Combat: The Gummy Ooze and Chocolate Golem are combat encounters that could also be overcome with arcane knowledge checks. See the monster stat pages for lore on how to fight or calm them.
- Roleplay Challenge: Convincing a Eggrotter to not detonate the Egg Beater 9000 can be accomplished either through role play or combat. The players need only show the appropriate amount of appreciation for his skills/inventions and offer to escort him back to the festival where they will tell everyone how great it was to have his help returning the Great Egg.
Skill Challenges
Chasing the Marshmallow Mephits through the woods to the Rotten Egg Cave is a skill challenge. For inspiration on how this works, I recommend Matt Colville’s video Skill Challenges! Running the Game #21, which is embedded below. Skip to 5:55 for mechanics of how to run the skill challenge.
Failing a skill challenge by more than 3 gives the characters disadvantage on their next chase roll. Succeeding by more than 3 gives them advantage on the next chase roll. Failing a skill challenge by more that 5 means the party member looses one piece of equipment. The lost item can be DM’s choice, be nice, don’t take their favorite item, OR ask each player to list 4 items on a sheet of paper numbered 1-4 and have the roll a d4 to see which item gets lost.
The chase ends when the party catches the mephits or the reach the Rotten Egg cave. If the party catches the mephits, they will begin laughing and hold up their hands in surrender. They can answer yes/no questions and will lead the party to the Rotten Egg cave if they are questioned about the Great Egg.
